Introduction

How to Clear a Job Interview In First Attempt

Not having enough experience is not the main reason why candidates lose out on interviews. It is because they cannot get their qualifications out clearly or quickly enough during the pressure of an interview that causes them to fail. The skills to interview for a position are separate from the skills for the job itself, and they can be learned and improved upon like any other skill.

The Certificate Course - Interview Skills from NIFM teaches candidates how to prepare for interviews, answer questions in a clear manner, and how to present themselves with confidence. The course focuses on the communication side of interviewing, rather than providing generic motivational counsel for job seekers.

The lectures in this course are presented in a video format that can be played back multiple times. You will receive immediate access to the course as soon as you register. You will be able to take the course at your own pace wherever you want to, using any device that has access to the Internet.

What Are Interview Skills?

Interviewing skills refer to the ability to communicate with confidence and clarity when presenting your experiences and background during an interview. Interviewing skills include, but are not limited to: structuring the way you respond to each question, managing any nerves you may be feeling prior to an interview, and understanding what the interviewer is looking for in your response to each question.

Interviews are not a reflection of current technical or job-specific qualifications; therefore, two candidates who possess similar experiences can produce vastly different results based solely on the confidence and clarity they used when presenting their backgrounds to the interviewer.

Why Do Interview Skills Matter So Much?

Interviews tend to be where applicants directly control how employers view candidates. A resume gets the applicant to the interview phase of the process, but the interview performance itself is what influences the employer's confidence in continuing with the hiring process.

Hiring managers will frequently make judgment decisions relatively quickly at a job interview based on the communication style, poise and competence displayed through the quality of the applicants’ answers in relation to the applicant’s relevant experience. Having good interviewing skills will allow an applicant's true qualifications to be heard clearly, rather than potentially having them obscured by nervousness and/or ill-structured responses.

How Should You Prepare Before an Interview?

To prepare for an effective interview, you want to make sure to research the company and get a deep understanding of what you have done in the past. This way you are well prepared to answer questions about past experiences that may be related to the position you are interviewing for.

  • - Conduct some detailed research on the company and the specific position you are interviewing for.
  • - Make sure to review your resume and identify the strongest experience on your resume to use as examples  during your interview.
  • - Take some time to practice common interview questions out loud, rather than just thinking about them.
  • - Have a few thoughtful questions prepared for the employer.
  • - Make sure to plan to arrive on time and know what you will need to bring.

How Do You Answer Interview Questions Clearly?

You can usually follow a clear structure to respond to interview questions. The first part is to state the response clearly. After that, give an example of the experience to support your answer. Finally, connect the example back to the position you are interviewing for.

It is important to keep your responses short and to not ramble. Taking too long to answer may result in losing the interviewer's interest, even if you have a lot of experience in the area.

For behavioral questions (e.g., tell me about a time when you dealt with a difficult situation), creating your response into a three-part format (i.e., situation, action, result) will help define the experience more clearly than if you do not create your response in the above manner.

How Can You Manage Nervousness During an Interview?

Nervousness before an interview is perfectly fine, irrespective of how many times a person has done an interview. Nervousness generally occurs due to an unknown future which is exactly what happens when you get invited for the first time to have your own interview. Practising your speaking with real-time verbal responses prior to the event will typically reduce your nerves, which is preferable than just reading from a different colour of pencil.
  • Pausing briefly before answering, rather than rushing into a response
  • Taking a slow breath if a question feels unexpected
  • Focusing on communicating clearly rather than delivering a "perfect" answer
  • Remembering that some hesitation is normal and rarely disqualifying on its own

What You Will Learn

  • How interviewers evaluate candidates beyond just qualifications
  • Practical techniques for preparing answers before an interview
  • How to structure clear, specific responses to common and behavioral questions
  • Approaches for managing nervousness and staying composed
  • How body language and tone affect an interviewer's impression
  • How to close an interview confidently, including questions to ask the interviewer

Common Interview Mistakes

  • Giving vague answers without specific examples to support them
  • Speaking negatively about a previous employer or manager
  • Failing to research the company or role beforehand
  • Rambling instead of giving a clear, structured answer
  • Not preparing any questions to ask the interviewer

Who Should Take This Course?

  • Job seekers preparing for upcoming interviews
  • Students entering the job market for the first time
  • Professionals looking to switch roles or industries
  • Anyone who feels underprepared or nervous about interviews
  • Career changers who need to reframe past experience for a new field

Career Relevance

Throughout all levels in a career, whether it’s applying for your first position or serving as an executive, these are the type of interview capabilities that should be focused on.
More specifically, when you apply for a job, interviews differ depending on the level of experience but some of the core competencies, such as having clear communication skills and providing structured responses as well as the ability to remain calm under stress, will continue to remain an applicable skill set no matter what type of job you hold.

Why Choose NIFM?

The NIFM’s Management Skills Development Programme focuses on developing practical and usable skills. One module of this programme is the Certificate Course In Interview Skills which provides a structured approach to develop both confidence and clarity in actual interview situations.

Since the course is all self-directed, you will set your own schedule for when you will participate in the course. Find out more about what’s covered in the course by looking at the course outline and start learning at your own pace.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are interview skills, and why do they matter?

Interviewing skills are the communication and preparation skills that give a candidate the tools needed to present their experience clearly and confidently during an interview. These skills include being able to structure responses, handle anxiety, and present your answers. Interview skills are important because many interviewers will evaluate candidates based on how clearly they communicated and how composed they were during the conversation, rather than simply on their credentials or background. Different candidates can have vastly different results when given the same experience based solely on how capable they were to communicate through anxiety; thus, it is deemed that interviewing skills are a distinct, learnable set of abilities apart from actual job knowledge.

How should I prepare for a job interview?

Part of being well prepared for an interview is doing research on both the company and position you are applying for, reviewing your own resume for positive examples of things you've done in the past to use as answers during your interview and answering your interview questions outloud instead of just mentally. Having several good questions prepared will show the interviewer that you really are truly interested in the position.

When answering questions, it is also very important to practice saying them outloud. Many times you can think through how you want to say something (or have rehearsed in your mind) but once you actually speak your mind under pressure, many times your answer will sound much less organized than when you answered them before.

How do I answer the question "tell me about yourself" in an interview?

The ideal response to the common interview question "tell me about yourself" would be a concise, organized overview of your most applicable background, present job and situation and what you hope to do next - as opposed to delivering a complete history of your life! A focused on the information important to the position being applied for is likely to result in a better interview response than a wide-ranging response that is less relevant. This course will provide an outline of the structure of a strong opening answer when delivering a confident introduction during the interview process.

What is the best way to answer behavioral interview questions?

When answering a behavioral interview question, such as "Describe how you've responded to a challenging circumstance," you should use the structure of + situation, + action, + result to answer the question. This approach will help ensure that your answer is both specific and results-oriented, rather than general in nature. Since they are interested in understanding how you would act when faced with a particular set of circumstances, your responses will carry much more weight when they include a specific example compared to a general statement regarding your typical behaviour when confronted with challenges.

How can I manage nervousness during an interview?

Nervousness is a normal reaction when getting interviewed because of the uncertainty around how the interview will go. To help eliminate some of the nervousness, practice your answers orally before coming into an interview. This is a much more effective method for reducing the uncertainty than just mentally reviewing your notes. After you start the interview, also pause for a moment before answering a question, breathe slowly before answering any questions that are unexpected, and focus on communicating clearly, rather than trying to give an absolutely "perfect" answer to the interviewer.

What are common interview mistakes candidates make?

Some frequent blunders that candidates tend to make in regards to their interviews are giving generalized responses as opposed to defined examples; talking badly about a past employer; rambling or being unorganized in the way you answer questions instead of giving straight to the point answers; not taking the time to look up information relating to the company before the interview; and not coming into an interview with any questions that you intend on asking the interviewer. Missing any of these common interview blunders may lead to seeming as if you do not have much genuine interest in the position. Understanding these issues in advance will allow you to be more successful when interviewing.

How important is body language in an interview?

In terms of nonverbal communication, it has a substantial factor in conveying to the interviewer about how confident and engaged the candidate appears. Having appropriate eye contact, open body posture, and not engaging in distracting activities like fidgeting contribute to a more favourable impression of you as a candidate. Although nonverbal communication assists your verbal responses, it is most impactful when it is used to support confident and clear responses rather than when it is used to make up for unclear responses.

What questions should I ask the interviewer at the end?

Asking the interviewer relevant questions at the end of the interview demonstrates a genuine interest in the position and the company. Examples of good questions are team dynamics, what success looks like in the position, or what are the department’s current areas of focus. Good questions are also not the kind that you could find through basic research and do not relate to pay or benefits at this time, which also helps you to stand out as a candidate.

How do I explain a career gap or job change in an interview?

When it comes to explaining a career gap or your transition from one role to another in an interview, it’s important to keep your explanation brief but honest and focused on what you have learned from the experience and how it has influenced your career aspirations. This webinar will help you prepare for how to confidently discuss your career changes without providing too much detail and/or appearing defensive.

What is the difference between a strong interview answer and a weak one?

In general, a strong answer will usually be very specific to the question asked, well structured and directly related to the question, with an example to support it. Strong answers typically include examples of your work and how you achieved your results. On the other hand, weak answers are usually vague, too broad, or not clearly related to the question. For example, it is generally better to provide a brief overview of a specific project and include an example of measurable success (such as how much time and money were saved) than it is to say, "I'm great at fixing problems."

How can I make a strong first impression in an interview?

Factors that help produce a strong first impression include: being on time; greeting the interviewer with confidence; presenting yourself professionally with appropriate attire; and communicating with poise and clarity at all times throughout the discussion from the moment the conversation begins.

Because candidates can create an early impression through the way they enter into an interview (e.g. introducing themselves and answering questions), interviewers are likely to believe their perceptions of the second half of the interview based on these very first interactions as well as any perceptions formed up until this point in the way the interviewee enters the room and conducts themselves.
