How Does the NISM Exam Work? Test Centre and Remote Modes

Posted by NIFM Editorial Team

The NISM exam process is straightforward once you see it end to end: you register and pay on the NISM certification portal, choose your series and slot, and (since 1 January 2023) sit the test at one of NISM’s test centres across India — with a remote-proctored, take-it-from-home option available for select series. It is a computer-based test, your score usually appears on screen the moment you submit, and the e-certificate follows within days.

That is the short version, but each step hides a rule that trips up first-timers — the 30-minute reporting cut-off, the exact photo ID that is accepted, what you may and may not carry in, and how remote mode differs from the centre. If you would rather learn the syllabus properly before you ever book a slot, a course built around structured NISM exam preparation turns the exam from a hurdle into a formality. Here is exactly how the NISM exam process works in 2026.

What kind of test is the NISM certification exam?

The NISM certification examinations are the SEBI-mandated qualifying exams that many market roles in India require — mutual fund distributors, research analysts, investment advisers, depository and back-office staff, derivatives dealers and more. They are administered by the National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM), an educational body set up by SEBI. NIFM prepares students for these exams; the certificate itself comes from passing NISM’s own test, which you sit externally.

Every NISM exam is a computer-based test made up of multiple-choice questions delivered on a screen, not on paper. There is no single “NISM exam” — there are dozens of numbered series (V-A, VIII, XV, X-A and so on), each with its own syllabus, duration, marks and pass mark. What is common across all of them is the process wrapped around the questions: how you register, how you prove who you are, how the exam is invigilated, and how the result reaches you. If you are still deciding which series applies to your job, our guide to the right NISM exam for each job role maps the exam to the career first.

How do you book and pay for the NISM exam?

Everything starts at the NISM certification portal (certifications.nism.ac.in). You create a login, fill in your personal details, and upload a scanned photograph along with your PAN and address proof. Once your profile is set up, you select the series you want, then choose a test centre, a date and a time slot from what is available. Payment is made online during the same flow.

Three booking rules matter more than people expect. First, your enrolment is generally valid for 180 days — you must sit the exam within that window. Second, you usually get one rescheduling opportunity, and it must be exercised at least four days before your booked date; leave it later and you lose the fee. Third, exam fees are non-refundable, so treat the booking as final once payment goes through. Choosing the wrong series or an inconvenient centre is an expensive mistake, which is exactly why it pays to be sure of your target before you pay.

Want to walk into the centre already sure of a pass?

NIFM’s SEBI-NISM exam-preparation track covers the full syllabus for the popular series with recorded lessons, chapter-wise practice and mock tests — in Hindi and English, at your own pace, with a course certificate on completion.

What are the rules on exam day at the test centre?

For the vast majority of series, exam day means visiting a physical NISM test centre. NISM moved certification exams to test-centre-based delivery with effect from 1 January 2023, when it confirmed its centres were fully functional again, and it now runs these exams at more than 200 centres nationwide. Here is what the day looks like.

Reach early. You must report 30 minutes before your slot. Arrive late and entry is denied — you are marked absent with no refund and no reschedule. Use the buffer for security and identity checks.

Carry the right photo ID. You need one original photo identity document: PAN Card, Aadhaar (UID), Driving Licence, Passport, or a DigiLocker document that carries an embedded photograph. If the name or photo does not match your registration, the centre can refuse entry, so make sure your booking details mirror your ID exactly.

Leave your gadgets outside. The centre bans books, notes, mobile phones, laptops, tablets, cameras, headphones, pen-drives and Bluetooth devices, along with food and alcohol. In most cases you may carry only a calculator and a pen; everything else goes into a locker. The exam interface itself is on the centre’s computer, so you do not need to bring anything digital.

None of this is meant to intimidate — it is standard for a SEBI-mandated qualifying exam. Treat it like a bank or airport check: predictable if you prepare, stressful only if you are caught out.

Can you take the NISM exam online from home?

Sometimes — but not for every series, and not as the default. NISM discontinued its general remote-proctored mode on 1 January 2023 and made test centres the standard. Since then it has offered remote-proctored (from-home) delivery for select series, such as the Mutual Fund Distributors examination, and it conducts some newer series in a remotely proctored environment. Availability is series-dependent and NISM states it can be withdrawn without prior notice, so the golden rule is: check the mode for your specific series on the certification portal at the time you book — do not assume.

If a remote slot is available and you choose it, the setup is stricter than most people expect. You need a Windows laptop or desktop with a working webcam and microphone and a stable connection (NISM specifies a minimum of 512 kbps). Your room must be clean with no books or materials, lit from the front so your face is clearly visible, and set against a plain background. Mobile phones, physical calculators and rough sheets are not allowed — an on-screen scientific calculator is provided instead — and there are no bio-breaks. A proctor watches through your webcam, and any suspicious behaviour, a dropped connection or a detected second screen can end the test on the spot.

What gets your NISM exam terminated or cancelled?

NISM treats exam integrity seriously, and the penalties are heavier than a simple “fail”. Whether you are at a centre or on a webcam, the following count as unfair means and can end your exam or void your result:

  • Communicating with anyone else during the exam, or being caught with restricted material such as notes or a phone.
  • Using prohibited electronics, or in remote mode, a second screen or another person in the room.
  • Moving away from your seat or the camera without the invigilator’s permission.
  • Impersonation or forged documents — the most serious category.
  • Abusive behaviour, or any attempt to copy or capture the question bank.

The consequences can include immediate expulsion, cancellation of the exam, denial of the certificate, forfeiture of the fee, a debarment of six months or more, and in serious cases such as impersonation, police involvement. The practical takeaway is simple: keep your desk clear, keep your eyes on your own screen, and never let anyone else near the exam. A genuine attempt that falls short can be re-booked; a disqualification follows you.

How and when do you get your NISM result and certificate?

This is the part candidates like best. For most test-centre exams, your score appears on screen the moment you submit (for candidates who registered with a PAN as their ID), so you walk out already knowing whether you passed. The formal e-certificate is issued as a soft copy, typically within 10–15 working days of the exam and is available from your portal login. You are allowed one certificate per exam.

Two nuances are worth knowing. First, negative marking varies by series — some NISM exams deduct marks for wrong answers and others do not, so read your series’ own pattern rather than assuming. Our breakdown of the toughest NISM exams by pass mark and negative marking shows how much this differs between series. Second, an NISM certificate is valid for three years, after which it must be kept current — we cover exactly how that works in our guide to NISM certificate validity, renewal and CPE rules. Passing the exam is the milestone; keeping the certificate live is the ongoing job.

What to do next

Now that the NISM exam process is clear — register on the portal, book your series and slot, carry the right ID, sit it at a centre (or remote-proctored where offered), and collect your on-screen result and e-certificate — the only variable left in your control is preparation. The process is fixed and fair; your score is not, and it turns entirely on how well you know the syllabus.

Start by confirming which series your role actually needs, then build a study plan around its exact pattern and pass mark. A structured, bilingual preparation course removes the guesswork, and practising under timed, exam-like conditions is the single biggest predictor of a first-attempt pass. Choose your series, set your date, and prepare with intent — the exam-day rules reward the candidate who arrives ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the NISM exam take?

Duration varies by series. Many NISM certification exams run for two hours with 100 questions, but some are longer or shorter and carry different pass marks, so always check the pattern for your specific series on the certification portal before you book.

Is the NISM exam online or at a centre?

For most series it is at a NISM test centre, which became the standard mode from 1 January 2023. A remote-proctored, from-home option exists for select series such as Mutual Fund Distributors, but availability changes, so confirm the mode for your series when you book.

What documents do I need for the NISM exam?

You need one original photo ID at the exam — PAN Card, Aadhaar, Driving Licence, Passport, or a DigiLocker document with an embedded photo. During registration you also upload a photograph plus PAN and address proof. The name and photo must match your booking.

Does the NISM exam have negative marking?

It depends on the series. Some NISM exams apply negative marking for wrong answers and others do not. Because it is not uniform, read the exam pattern for your chosen series rather than assuming one rule applies everywhere.

When do I get my NISM result and certificate?

For test-centre exams your score usually appears on screen as soon as you submit. The e-certificate is issued as a soft copy, typically within 10–15 working days, from your portal login, and it is valid for three years.

Can I reschedule my NISM exam?

Usually once, and only if you do it at least four days before your booked date. Enrolment is generally valid for 180 days and fees are non-refundable, so plan your slot carefully and reschedule early if your plans change.
