What Is ACCA Financial Reporting (FR)?

The ACCA Financial Reporting (FR), formally ACCA F7 syllabus, is designed to develop your knowledge and skills for understanding and applying accounting standards and the theoretical framework in the preparation and interpretation of financial statements for single entities and group entities.

The ACCA Financial Reporting (FR) syllabus will build on this fundamental knowledge gained in the Financial Accounting (FA) paper and advance this knowledge, instituting the necessary foundations course to then study the Strategic Business Reporting (SBR) exam paper at the Professional level. The successful completion of this exam will demonstrate to employers and the profession that you are capable of preparing and interpreting high-quality, compliant financial statements in line with internationally accepted practices (primarily IFRS) in order to produce financial statements.

ACCA FR Exam Format

The ACCA Financial Reporting examination is a computer-based exam (also known as "CBE") that lasts three hours and contains only compulsory questions. A candidate is required to attain a score of 50% or higher to pass the ACCA Financial Reporting examination. The examination is divided into three sections, examining your knowledge, application, and analysis:

Section B

  • Section A questions are standalone, covering the entire ACCA FR syllabus in their subject matter.

  • Section B contains a number of short case studies, where five multiple-choice questions cover the application of knowledge to one scenario.

  • Section C questions will take longer to provide answers as they require you to write a detailed narrative and/or numerical answers (using Word and Excel). Typically, one question will require you to prepare financial statements (either single entity or group), and the other question will require interpretation of those financial statements using ratio analysis.

ACCA FR Syllabus

The ACCA FR syllabus is clearly divided into five areas of knowledge and has a very pronounced real-world application of IFRS principles. These areas are where you will spend the bulk of your time, developing your skills and knowledge, and you must ensure you are comfortable with both the knowledge base as well as the examination case study application of that knowledge.

A. The Conceptual and Regulatory Framework

This section explores the fundamental concepts of financial reporting, including:

  • The conceptual framework of financial reporting (e.g., the qualitative characteristics of useful information).

  • The regulatory environment and roles of the IASB, and the use of IFRS.

  • The concepts and principles surrounding groups and consolidated financial statements.

B. Accounting for Transactions in Financial Statements

This is a computation-heavy area and looks at a specific selection of International Financial Reporting Standards. Key standards and areas of accounting include:

  • Non-current assets, both tangible and intangible (IAS 16, IAS 38)

  • Impairment of Assets (IAS 36)

  • Inventories (IAS 2) and Revenue (IFRS 15)

  • Leasing (IFRS 16), Provisions (IAS 37), and taxation (IAS 12)

  • Financial Instruments, Government Grants, and Foreign Currency Transactions.

C. Preparation of Single Entity Financial Statements

This area involves the preparation of the primary financial statements for a company from the trial balance or incomplete records, and ensuring that accounting standards are applied.

D. Preparation of Consolidated Financial Statements

A key area that will prove rather challenging to obtain. You should be able to:

  • Understand the concept of a group.

  • Prepare a Consolidated Statement of Financial Position and a Consolidated Statement of Profit or Loss for simple groups denoted by a parent and one domestic subsidiary, including the concepts of goodwill impairment and non-controlling interest.

E. Analysis and Interpretation of Financial Statements

This section will test your ability to calculate and interpret key accounting ratios and trends in order to assess the performance, profitability, liquidity, and solvency of a company.

Preparation For Exam

To prepare effectively for the ACCA Financial Reporting exam, you will be required to take a structured approach that focuses on both theoretical study and practical application.

  • Conceptual Understanding: It is vital in your learning to maintain a strong understanding of the Conceptual Framework and apply all the key IFRS standards, and understand the reason for accounting treatment when applied.

  • Practice, Practice, Practice: The single most vital activity you can do is practice the questions, particularly the 20-mark constructed response of Section C. This will strengthen your theoretical knowledge, but it will also provide you with critical experience in managing your time effectively, as well as practical experience to use the CBE word processor and spreadsheet functionality.

  • Group Accounting: You will want to dedicate substantial time to the consolidation of group accounting because it will most likely be tested quite heavily.

  • Interpreting Ratios: Don't just remember the formulas. Practice interpreting what your ratios mean in the context of the business situation.
